Cancun Weather

The city of Cancun is located in the southeast of Mexico in the state of Quintana Roo. Its location in the Riviera Maya makes it one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, not only for its beaches but also because of the archaeology in the area. Cancun experiences tropical climate with temperatures which remain pretty much the same throughout the year. The Cancun weather is affected by the Atlantic Ocean and trade winds which can push the temperatures down. The weather in Cancun can also be affected by hurricane season. In fact Cancun has seen some powerful hurricane strikes throughout the years. During the months of November through February the temperatures feel somewhat better because of the breezes coming from the north.

Sea Temperatures

The water temperature in Cancun is warm year round. This is due to the current in the Yucatan Peninsula which brings warm waters from the south. The lowest temperature for the water in Cancun is 26 Celsius (79 Fahrenheit) while in the summer those temperatures can reach 29 Celsius (84 Fahrenheit). That type of sea temperature in the Cancun weather makes for a great surprise for tourists coming from the United States or Canada and Europe. The water temperatures are not something that you will find everywhere, but if you visit us at The Cancun Weather.Net you will be able to see when the temperatures get better. If you are coming to Cancun you will mostly want to spend your time in or near the water anyway.

Hurricane History

Cancun's location in the Caribbean means that hurricanes can often hit the city. While the city does have a pretty good evacuation system you should still make sure to check www.thecancunweather.net during hurricane season. Some of the hurricanes which have hit Cancun in the past include Gilbert which was the second most powerful hurricane ever observed in this area of the Atlantic. Hurricane Wilma also made landfall in 2005 with winds that exceeded 240 kmh (150 mph). Finally in 2007 hurricane Dean hit Cancun with winds faster than 310 kmh (190 mph). Because of the chances of hurricanes which the Cancun weather can have you should plan your vacation accordingly but keep in mind that hurricane strikes are rare.

Rainfall

The last thing that you want in your beach vacation is rain but in this part of the Caribbean it is almost impossible to avoid it. Cancun weather sees an average of 1,300 millimeters (51.181 inches) of rain each year with most of it falling during the month of October which gets 282.2 millimeters (11.1 inches) as an average. We at The Cancun Weather.Net recommend that if you want to avoid rain during your vacation you try to visit in the first five months of the year. Also keep in mind that sometimes due to the really hot temperatures that you can experience, rain is almost welcome when you visit Cancun. Your hotel as well as the city will have other activities during rainy days.

High Temperatures

Though most of the year the temperatures stay pretty even, some months are clearly hotter than others. The hottest month in Cancun is August which has an average high temperature of 34.8 Celsius (94.6 Fahrenheit). All throughout the summer temperatures will stay around that number. The coolest month of the year is January which sees an average low temperature of 19.9 Celsius (67.8 Fahrenheit). The temperature has gone lower than that but it is very rare. The lowest temperature ever recorded in Cancun was 9.5 Celsius (49.1 Fahrenheit). No matter when you visit Cancun, you will probably have high temperatures but we at www.thecancunweather.net recommend that if you are visiting in the winter that you have one emergency sweater with you just in case.

Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit Cancun depends on what you want to do. Every time of the year will give you great beach weather but some will have higher water temperatures so if that is what you want, then the summer is best. If you want to avoid the crowds and you want less of a chance of a powerful tropical storm, you should then plan your vacation for the early spring. The water may be a bit cooler but you will have less people around you and the temperatures outside will still be great. It rains too much in the fall to consider it as the best time to visit. The winter can make for a great escape from the cold when you visit Cancun.
